GOODBYE MID WEST – HELLO CENTRAL!

We are excited to announce that the Jurien Bay to Perth route has been renamed Central for the 2020 Ride and beyond.  This name change was  made in consultation with a number of key stakeholders including the HRFY Organising Committee, riders and Support Crew, and better reflects the geographic regions the peloton travels through during Ride Week.

MEET YOUR EVENT DIRECTORS FOR 2020

Phil ‘Cous’ Cousins – COASTAL

Cous is no stranger to the Ride, having ridden it a whopping 15 times before hanging up the cleats and stepping into a Coastal Support Crew role in 2019.

Although 2020 will be Phil’s first year as Event Director, he brings with him a wealth of experience in all things Ride related.

Phil’s most memorable moment on the Hawaiian Ride for Youth was his last ride in 2018, as he completed it accompanied by his whole family – Jarrad, Danielle, Brett and Jenelle.

David ‘Corndog’ Corney – INLAND

David has a long history with the Ride, having ridden in the event for six years and participating on Inland Support Crew for a further three years.

The 2020 Ride will be Corndog’s first year as Inland Event Director.  He comes very well equipped for the role, having held senior leadership positions on the Rottnest Channel Swim Association’s Committee over many years.

David’s most memorable moment on the Ride was at the final training session before his first event. A car pulled up and a teenage boy hopped out and walked to the centre of the circle of bikes.  The boy, who was a client of Youth Focus, looked around the group of riders and said, “Thanks for what you are doing. I probably wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Youth Focus”.

For David, this incredibly powerful moment created a clear link between the riders and the mental health services they help they fund.

Simon ‘Willo’ Williamson – WHEATBELT

Simon is a true architect of the Ride, having mapped and planned the original Inland and Wheatbelt routes. Simon has worn every hat there is on the Hawaiian Ride for Youth – rider, Support Crew and Event Director.

2020 will be Simon’ third spell as an Event Director, having previously held the role on the Inland routes in 2012 and 2015.

One of Simon’s most memorable moments on the Ride was mapping out and leading the first Inland route for the Ride’s 10th anniversary year.

Su Groome – CENTRAL

Su will be embarking on her fourth Ride in 2020, after starting as Lead Van Driver in 2017, before taking the reins as Event Director for the Central route (previously Mid West) in 2018.

Su has pioneered a number of changes to the original Central route, ensuring riders receive the best Ride Week experience possible – her motto for Ride Week is “it’s all about the riders!”

Su’s most memorable moments on the Hawaiian Ride for Youth include the Mingenew lunch stop in 2018, and successfully getting every rider safely down the hill on the way back to Perth that year.

The Bicycle Entrepreneur (TBE) are pleased to offer all 2020 Hawaiian Ride for Youth participants a free same day bicycle assessment.* The assessment will evaluate the current mechanical state of your bike and determine if any repairs or servicing is required now or in the next six months.
