Alumni News | August 2021

Hi Everyone

We’re only six weeks away from the kick-off of official Hawaiian Ride for Youth training – where has the year gone? The start of official training as well as the launch event is a very exciting time for both new and returning riders – it signifies the start of your rewarding journey as a rider in the Hawaiian Ride for Youth.

The Rider Recruitment & Engagement sub-committee (RE&R SC) are working tirelessly to ensure we have a good balance of riding and fundraising experience within each team as well as across the three pelotons. I’m sure you can appreciate this is no small task, particularly with a record number of riders for 2022 across the traditional routes and the Heritage Peloton.

Last month, we held an ‘Elevate Your Fundraising’ workshop, and HRFY Organising Committee Media Representative, Karen Brown presented to attendees on the power of storytelling and how your unique story can support your fundra

ising efforts. If you were not able to attend, don’t worry we will be running another workshop as outlined below.

With teams and captains being finalised, we will be facilitating a second ‘Elevate Your Fundraising’ session on 28 October. You are strongly encouraged to attend this with your team as it will be a great opportunity to brainstorm with experienced fundraisers as well as work on your team’s fundraising strategy. You will also learn about how this year’s collaboration with WA Cricket and the WACA Ground can help you and your team put on a stellar fundraising event.

Finally, as we approach our busy few months please see below for our upcoming calendar of events. These dates may be subject to change, but as of this moment, here are the dates of official Ride events.

All the best
Chris
Chair, HRFY Organising Committee

MEET YOUR HRFY ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The HRFY Organising Committee (HRFYOC) is made up of a group of dedicated HRFY alumni who volunteer their time to assist with the management and implementation of this iconic event. Each member of the Committee represents an aspect of the Ride. This year’s HRFYOC members are:

Christina Matthews – CHAIR

Chris is the CEO of the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), the Chair of the HRFYOC since 2020 and has completed the full Ride twice as well as the CEO Challenge twice. Chris is a well-respected voice within the Australian cricket community, as the country’s most capped female Test player and the record holder for most dismissals by an Australian wicketkeeper.

Phil “Cous” Cousins – DEPUTY CHAIR
Cous is no stranger to the Ride, having ridden it a whopping 15 times before hanging up the cleats and stepping into a Coastal Support Crew role in 2019.

Phil’s most memorable moment on the Hawaiian Ride for Youth was his last ride in 2018, as he completed it accompanied by his whole family – Jarrad, Danielle, Brett and Jenelle. This year we’ll see Cous join the Heritage Peloton for one last hurrah on the bike!

Dougal Burton – COACHING

Dougal will be participating in his 9th Ride in 2022 and has been on the HRFYOC since 2020. For Dougal, this event is not about the bike, it’s about reaching out to young people at risk of suicide, self-harm and depression and letting them know they are not alone. By day, Dougal works in property finance at Bankwest.

Karen Brown – MEDIA

Karen is a National Director at Cannings Purple – Strategic Communications and has been the Media Representative on the HRFYOC since 2018. Karen has seen the Ride from all angles, having completed three rides as a rider and undertaking a support crew role in 2021.

Dave “Corndog” Corney – EVENT DIRECTOR

Corndog comes very well equipped for the role, having held senior leadership positions on the Rottnest Channel Swim Association’s Committee over many years.

Dave’s most memorable moment on the Ride was at the final training session before his first event. A car pulled up and a teenage boy hopped out and walked to the centre of the circle of bikes. The boy, who was a client of Youth Focus, looked around the group of riders and said, “Thanks for what you are doing. I probably wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Youth Focus”.

For Dave, this incredibly powerful moment created a clear link between the riders and the mental health services they help they fund.

Cam Alder – RIDER RECRUITMENT & ENGAGEMENT

Cam has been involved in the Ride for many years, and 2022 will be his 10th Ride. During his years as a rider, Cam has enjoyed taking on the role of Team Captain many times and has been part of the Hawaiian Ride for Youth Organising Committee as the Fundraising Representative and more recently Chair of the Rider Recruitment & Engagement Sub Committee.

Paul “Hoppy” Hopwood – ALUMNI

Hoppy was the FIRST ever event director (in 2003) and has seen first-hand the positive impact the Ride has had on regional WA. He is very passionate about helping the young people of WA and believes everyone should have access to the mental health services.

Jacinta Wandel – SUPPORT CREW

Jacinta joined the Ride family in 2017 and completed three rides as a rider before moving to a support crew role in 2021. Completing the Ride was initially Jacinta’s “big hairy audacious goal” (BHAG) and faced that challenge head on, committing to early mornings and learning to ride a road bike!
