I ride for Kai.
Kai was a beautiful young man who grew up with my own children as part of our close community.
Kai took his life at the age of 20, a terrible and deeply shocking loss which will be forever felt and remembered.
Kai’s suicide reminds us that mental illness touches us all, and we all have a responsibility to do what we can to support our young people, particularly as they transition the sometimes difficult path to adulthood.
The Hawaiian Ride for Youth has been doing just that for 22 years, raising millions of dollars to support Youth Focus. I am privileged to be part of a riding community that continues the work to raise awareness and money for this cause and Youth Focus’s vital services.
It’s my way of honouring Kai’s life and legacy.
