2020 | A closing message from the Chair

I would like to thank all of you wonderful people for putting so much into getting ready for the 2020 Hawaiian Ride for Youth.

At our opening function in October last year I said to everyone ‘prepare for the best six months and one week of your life’.  The six months was done to perfection, and the one week was unfortunately taken away from us, but hopefully is still something to look forward to in 2021.  On behalf of the Hawaiian Ride for Youth Organising Committee, I sincerely hope that every rider and support crew comes back next year to finish off what has been started.

The decision to cancel the 2020 Ride was incredibly tough, but in the circumstances, the only decision that could be made.  The decision aligns totally with our Vision, Purpose and above all our Values – Safety, Respect, Courage, Camaraderie and Passion.  We have a duty to look after and respect our riders and support crew, our sponsors and supporters and the communities with which we were going to engage.

I would like to thank Pete and his wonderful band of coaches, the team captains and those that took on the role of peloton leads.  Everyone has done an outstanding job over the last six months, but ultimately, it is the individual who has to do the hard work and deserves to take the credit.

As I prepare to step down after three years in the role of Chair of the Hawaiian Ride for Youth Organising Committee, I would like to thank all of the committee members over that time for all of the support and good counsel given to me.  I step away knowing that the 2021 Ride is in safe hands with Christina Matthews stepping up to the plate.

I cannot emphasise strongly enough our values, and with the ever increasing restrictions on size of ride groups and social distancing, there will be many times in the coming weeks and months where you will be challenged emotionally and mentally.  This ‘thing’ that has been such a big part of your life for six months is gone, as is potentially the absolute joy of getting on your bike and riding with your mates.  It can leave a massive hole and I encourage you to reach out to your team mates, captains, coaches or whoever you feel is best to support you.  Youth Focus can and will assist.

So again, thank you for everything that you have done supporting the Hawaiian Ride for Youth and Youth Focus.  I say from the depths of my heart, what you have done is immeasurable to all of us and especially the young people of Western Australia that we support.  Your efforts at training, the work done to raise valuable funds for Youth Focus and the work done in raising the social awareness of youth mental illness epitomises everything that the Hawaiian Ride for Youth is about.

Take care and stay safe.  Above all, please look back on the last six months and reflect on what you have achieved.

See you all next year.
